How many bingo cards do I need?
Print one card per player plus 10% spares (at least two). For word bingo, use at least 40 items on a 5×5 card: with fewer, many players win on the same call.

Cards: one per player, plus spares
Each player needs one card per game. Print about 10% more than your guest count, and never fewer than two spares, for late arrivals and spilled drinks. For 30 guests, print 33 or 34 cards.
Some players like to play two or three cards at once. That is fine for adults in a slow game, but in a fast game or with children, one card each keeps everyone at the same pace and makes checking winners easier.
You can print up to 100 different cards in one set with the bingo card generator. Every card has a code, so you can check a claim with the number caller instead of reading the whole card.

Items: why 24 is not enough for word bingo
A 5×5 card with a FREE space has 24 squares to fill. If your list has exactly 24 words, every card holds the same 24 words in a different order. In a line game that means many cards finish a line on the same call. In a blackout game every card wins on the 24th call, all at once.
We ran each game below 400 times with the same card maker that makes your PDF: one 5×5 card per player, FREE space in the middle, “any line” pattern. Each cell shows the median number of calls until the first bingo, and how often two or more players got bingo on that same call (a tie).
| Players | 24 items | 40 items | 75 items |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | 9 calls · 22% ties | 14 calls · 10% ties | 26 calls · 8% ties |
| 30 | 8 calls · 30% ties | 12 calls · 18% ties | 21 calls · 11% ties |
| 60 | 7 calls · 28% ties | 10 calls · 19% ties | 18 calls · 11% ties |
| 100 | 6 calls · 35% ties | 10 calls · 20% ties | 16 calls · 12% ties |
What the table shows:
- More players, shorter rounds. With 10 players a round takes much longer than with 100, whatever the list.
- More items, fewer ties. A longer list means cards overlap less, so the first bingo is more often a single winner. Ties never disappear completely, so decide before you start how to break one (split the prize, or play on to the next call).
- 40 items is a good minimum for a 5×5 card; 75 is better for big groups. For smaller cards, aim for at least two-thirds more items than squares: 15 or more for 3×3, 27 or more for 4×4.
Number bingo for comparison
For 75-ball number cards the list is always 1 to 75, so the only question is how many players you have:
| Players | Numbers 1–75 |
|---|---|
| 10 | 25 calls · 8% ties |
| 30 | 21 calls · 14% ties |
| 60 | 18 calls · 16% ties |
| 100 | 16 calls · 18% ties |
A single 75-ball card needs on average about 41 calls to complete a line on its own (Wizard of Odds); with many cards in play, someone gets there much sooner.
How long will a round take?
Multiply the calls by your pace. At 8 seconds per call (the caller’s default auto speed), 20 calls take under 3 minutes. Music bingo is slower: at 30 seconds per song, the same 20 calls take 10 minutes. Add a minute or two for each claim you check.
Quick answers
- Party of 20: print 22 to 24 cards; a list of 40+ words.
- Classroom of 30: print 33 cards; 3×3 or 4×4 cards for young children, with 15 to 27 words.
- Fundraiser of 100: print 110 cards (two sets of 55, or one set of 100 plus a second set for spares).
